Acquittal for Lluís

A group of people from Torredembarra has created a collective called "Acquittal for Lluís!" to support Lluís Sunyer, from the Town of Torredembarra. Lluís Sunyer finds himself in the middle of a legal process with a repressive nature. The facts date back to 2008 when the accused spread an ironic picture from his personal Blog where he criticized the fiscal plundering our country is under in comparison to an autonomous region of Spain. It must be noted that this picture had already done the rounds in the Social Networks that he didn't create it and that, at any rate, all he did was to exercise his "supposed" right to free speech.

Lluís has been accused of "Outrage to the Spanish Nation", a crime that in Spain is considered very serious indeed. This is why this might end with a €145,000 fine and a 2-year prison sentence.

From our point of view, this legal process is yet another attack coming from the most unpleasantly backwards Spanishness, which is promoting fear and criminal punishment in order to quash social movements that question the current system.

Lluís is not a corrupt politician nor does he evict families from their only home. Lluís doesn't rescue banks or building companies and doesn't even have his money safely tucked away in Fiscal Paradise Countries. Lluís doesn't incarcerate people who demonstrate on the streets for a better future. Lluís belongs to the close-knit community of Torredembarra. He’s a colleague that after many years is still ready for whatever may come in his work and his social causes –and it is only because of that he is being persecuted and may be sent to prison.

We, from our Lluís Support Group, demand his immediate acquittal. Not only that: We join the popular demand of amnesty to all the people who are still being persecuted in Catalonia for their political activism. We demand an end to all repressive measures against the aspirations of freedom for the Catalan Countries. We demand the implementation of the right to self-determination, the only democratic way out which will put an end to the political conflict that confronts our people with the State and the institutions whose rule we are under.

We urge the country as a whole to mobilize and disseminate this case. Only together can we stop in their tracks those who will deny us the possibility to advance our ideals.
